“Last night I fell asleep”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last night I fell asleep, and in a dream, I wrote a poem. I worked every line into<\/p>\n\n\n\n

place, and when I\u2019d finished, I woke up, scribbled the poem down in the dark,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and went back to sleep. In the morning, I picked up the notepad beside my bed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

expecting to find the poem, but there was only a single word printed there:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

snow. The authentic self is inarticulate, and there is no end to the excitement<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Each moment blossoms”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each moment blossoms, stutters, and takes its place in the past. Bees sip water<\/p>\n\n\n\n

from the moss at the edge of a pond. Scarlet oaks tremble in a breeze. Night<\/p>\n\n\n\n

falls. I held Gene\u2019s hand while he was dying. He fell asleep, and when he woke,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

his mouth tightened, and he started to cry. He didn\u2019t cry because he was dying,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he cried because I was there, and would have to watch him die. Outside,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the sea was going up in flames.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
