Long-Distance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\nYour wooden leg stood beside the bed
\nin its tennis shoe & sock, trailing its fasteners,\nits amputated man leaning invisibly against the wall.
\nYou pulled back the sheet so I could touch\nyour stump, the small hole in your left foot.
\nI touched everything. I was curious. I was eighteen\n& ignorant. You told me the little
\nyou thought I could handle.\nThirty years gone since then
\nto wives, meth, government checks…\nLast year they took a kidney
\n& a few inches more of your right thigh.\nYour two sons were fed to a different war
\n& spit back out. Now\nthey induct the nervous teenagers of Phoenix
\ninto the intricacies of parallel parking,\nthe number of feet to trail the car ahead.
\nYou & I are a late-night phone call.\nYou stretch out beside your drained pool,
\nshirtless in the heat\nwith a bottle of Jack, I cradle my California wine.
\nWhen your new prosthesis topples\nto the cement by the lounge chair
\nI try to hear\nwhat the fallen man says
\nas you set him upright.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forms of Love<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\nI love you but I’m married.
\nI love you but I wish you had more hair.
\nI love you more.
\nI love you more like a friend.
\nI love your friends more than you.
\nI love how when we go into a mall and classical muzak is playing,
\nyou can always name the composer.
\nI love you, but one or both of us is\/are fictional.
\nI love you but “I” am an unstable signifier.
\nI love you saying, “I understand the semiotics of that,” when I said,
\n“I had a little personal business to take care of.”
\nI love you as long as you love me back.
\nI love you in spite of the restraining order.
\nI love you from the coma you put me in.
\nI love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone, except for this one guy.
\nI love you when you’re not drunk and stupid.
\nI love how you get me.
\nI love your pain, it’s so competitive.
\nI love how emotionally unavailable you are.
\nI love you like I’m a strange backyard and you’re running from the cops,
\nlooking for a place to stash your gun.
\nI love your hair.
\nI love you but I’m just not that into you.
\nI love you secretly.
\nI love how you make me feel like I’m a monastery in the desert.
\nI love how you defined grace as the little turn the blood in the syringe
\ntakes when you’re shooting heroin, after you pull back the plunger
\nslightly to make sure you’ve hit the vein.
\nI love your mother, she’s the opposite of mine.
\nI love you and feel a powerful spiritual connection to you, even though
\nwe’ve never met.
\nI love your tacos! I love your stick deodorant!
\nI love it when you tie me up with ropes using the knots you learned in
\nBoy Scouts, and when you do the stoned Dennis Hopper rap
\nfrom Apocalypse Now!
\n<\/em>I love your extravagant double takes!
\nI love your mother, even though I’m nearly her age!
\nI love everything about you except your hair.
