Two Poems by Elizabeth Tannen<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Liz Phair, fifteen weeks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 \nOn the same morning I learn
\nthe fetus is developing folds that\nwill become ears I also hear
\nthat Liz Phair has a new album\nwhich makes me weepy because
\nspecial sentimentalities go along\nwith being pregnant and with being
\na teenager and hearing her name now\nconverges these chapters, makes
\nme reminisce about being fifteen\nand in the back of Webster Hall,
\nswaying because I was so uncomfortable\nin my body and so taken
\nwith excitement to be at my very\nfirst concert beside a very
\npretty friend whose taste in music\nI let mold mine. Liz’s voice
\nhas stayed the same but her heartache\nhasn’t aged well. She sounds
\nless fierce, more codependent.\nWe were both supposed to stay
\nyouthful forever. We were both\nsupposed to remain as cool
\nas we felt in the 90s. I listen\nto the new album again to try
\nand like it better but it just\nmakes me want to hear
\nExile in Guyville, and I belt out\nthe lyrics like the fetus
\ncan hear, like it might forgive\nme and Liz for the imperfect
\nways we’ve aged.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riddle, six weeks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 Are you sure you want to switch<\/em>
to pregnancy-tracking mode?<\/em>\nmy period-tracking app asks and a purple
\ncircle with a peanut-shaped image of an embryo\nat the center stares up at me as I stand
\nin the white-walled laundry room\nof my apartment building basement
\nwhere I have come to hide\nfrom my partner who does not want
\na pregnancy or a baby or a child\nand to retrieve a load of wet washing
\nand in the process I’ve hit what now\nappears to be a very significant button
\nwhose pressing will activate an endless\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

stream of content warning women what<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to eat and what not to eat and what skin\nproducts to avoid and which to use and
\non any given day, whether your embryo\nis the size of a sesame seed or a lentil
\nand which exercises you should try\nand which never and whatever you do,
\ndon’t stress out, it’s bad for the baby<\/em>,\nbut I don’t know that yet and in the moment
\nI’m not prepared because it’s Friday\nand I’m between Zoom meetings and
\nit’s been only minutes since I removed\nthe pink wrapper on the First Response test
\nand peed into a glass jar that used to hold\na pine-scented candle but today
\nholds my yellow urine which apparently\ncontains the hormone that the test
\nsays means positive<\/em> which means\nthat today my body is pregnant and yet
\nmy body is also over thirty-five and has\nnever, to my knowledge, carried a pregnancy
\nand there are too many emotions to process\nall of which will conflict directly with those
\nof my baby-hating partner and so it seems\nstrange that the app whose job I thought
\nit was to simply track my menstrual cycle\nshould be so bold as to ask whether
