“The Pleasures of Ruin” by Maya Jewell Zeller<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

is one of the easiest kinds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of pleasure. Take this stack<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

of colored blocks built<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

by one child, rectangular green<\/p>\n\n\n\n

on a red square with a yellow<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

triangle on top: crash,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the younger child comes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

like a storm into a picnic,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

like a story. Now someone<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

wants something to put<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in the mouth: a small fruit,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

perhaps, like a plum or just<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the branches of a plum,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

gathered into some girl’s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

arms. Now something<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

cannot be had. Oh, dear, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

some whole trees, and some more<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

trees, and water, oh, a baby,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

or a lost job. A hangnail, a day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

moon. A bowl of oranges,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

molding. And the most acute<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

pleasure of some girl losing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her flowers in the stream,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

she throws in those white stars<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

one by one, even the stems,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

even the leafage,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the unopened ones, too,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

she can hardly wait to forget them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
