Two Poems by Allison Seay<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Mother of Memory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the dark, when it is silent as underwater,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can hear bells ringing, knowing it is impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I lie there listening and wonder if it is you, a sign<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of your return. I feel in my heart a tenderness and think<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if I am just quiet enough you might appear<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and tell me another story from your life before me<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(about the schoolgirls who feared Madame<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or when you went swimming in the dark<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with women you loved<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or rode a motorcycle through Barcelona, sipping gin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You would remind me of our old joy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

peeling oranges in the yard, napping beside the plum tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days I am a student of desire, not of divinity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and my only true virtue is constancy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the weather keeps shifting. I keep wanting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mother of memory must also be the mother<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of sound, the mother of my muse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come back, I say, my impossible bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mother of Anxiety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are days each hour is a difficult swallow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This hour I have wondered about a word that means until-ness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a perpetual waiting like I am always waiting<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for you. You who are my whole anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I look through the trees each hour<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to see if it is you or not, that figure in the forest coming nearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
