Cathy, when you were a doctor<\/p>\n\n\n\n

did you hate how our government bossed you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

how The Man just had<\/em> to get his hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in there? I need to know, Cathy. I’m scared. I wake up<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

counting my pills and the days I’ll need my pills,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

which are unknown, so let’s call them endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I admit I wasn’t living right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used myself roughly and I<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

enjoyed it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

drank milk and whiskey<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and assumed these pleasures were normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know–you’ve taught me to know–<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

my health is my responsibility. It is just<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to blame myself for depending on the government,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

just as I blame myself for choosing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the wrong profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poetry. Ha!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who thought that would work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I call this work, Cathy, I do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m working right now, so hard,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

writing you. It is work to consider<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what a big job you have, and yet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

it is not your job to meet me for coffee<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or in the aisle, nor is it your job<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

to hear me, Kate Lebo,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

above the throng I belong to,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(one woman on a block of women in a town of women\u00ad–<\/p>\n\n\n\n

half of whom will pass your seventh term snug<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

in victory, their favorite Cathy on the job)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but I wish we could get a drink<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

anyway. You might find me ready<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the doctor, ready<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

to confess. I already know<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what you’ll say. Don’t hate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

your representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
