{"id":535,"date":"2017-04-24T16:31:03","date_gmt":"2017-04-24T23:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test-inside.ewu.edu\/successfultransitions\/?page_id=535"},"modified":"2024-03-28T17:08:20","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T00:08:20","slug":"our-problem-of-practice","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/test-inside.ewu.edu\/successfultransitions\/ela-cd\/our-problem-of-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Problem of Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b><i>What Significant Problem of Practice did Your Intervention Target?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Initial Problem of Practice I:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">Students don\u2019t see <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetandmetacognition.weebly.com\/reading.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #8d5024\">reading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">\u00a0and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetandmetacognition.weebly.com\/researching.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #b748ae\">researching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\"> as a valuable means to gain knowledge and increase experience, evidenced by their minimal use of textual support in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetandmetacognition.weebly.com\/discussing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #8d7824\">discussions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetandmetacognition.weebly.com\/writing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #508d24\">writing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">. \u00a0This series of lessons can be taught to help students see the value of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetandmetacognition.weebly.com\/annotating.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annotation<\/a><span style=\"color: #24678d\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">giving them a tool about how to gain knowledge and\u00a0increase experience to get them to use\u00a0their reading and researching as evidence<\/span><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">. This is introductory material intended for high school or pre-college-level courses. <\/span><span style=\"color: #d5d5d5\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Initial Problem of Practice II:<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">Explore the tendency of some students to \u201cgive up\u201d when they encountered challenges in their <\/span><span style=\"color: #8d2424\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetandmetacognition.weebly.com\/researching.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">projects, instead of relying on teachers to solve problems. We wanted to find a way to instill a sense of independence in students as they moved through the steps of research and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetandmetacognition.weebly.com\/writing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #5848b7\">writing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a\">. We hypothesized that a focus on metacognition and reflective practices might help improve their own problem-solving skills and instill a greater sense of independence.
