{"id":408,"date":"2013-01-18T11:59:59","date_gmt":"2013-01-18T18:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/test-inside.ewu.edu\/studentaffairs\/?p=408"},"modified":"2013-01-18T11:59:59","modified_gmt":"2013-01-18T18:59:59","slug":"nota-bene-winter-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test-inside.ewu.edu\/studentaffairs\/nota-bene-winter-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Nota Bene Winter 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Award Winning Program:\u00a0 <\/strong>Student Affairs has been awarded the <strong>NASPA<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/a> Gold Excellence Award for Housing\/Residential Life.<\/strong>\u00a0 The award recognizes EWU\u2019s success in developing a vibrant Computing and Engineering Sciences Living\/Learning Community (LLC).\u00a0 It is the singular top award for residence life programs nationally.\u00a0 \u00a0The award submission was entitled:\u00a0 \u201cLiving, Learning and Laundry:\u00a0 faculty involvement in a STEM-focused LLC.\u201d\u00a0 Among the outcomes highlighted were 92-94% retention for the students, 100% pass rate in math courses, increased GPAs, and strong integration into campus co-curricular activities.\u00a0 Approximately 70 students are expected to be part of this LLC in fall 2013, and they will be housed in the new residence hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Counseling and Psychological Services served over 300 students during fall quarter<\/strong>, providing nearly 1,100 assessment and treatment sessions. Over 1,200 individuals participated in outreach programs provided by CAPS staff (e.g., Student Workshop Series, Veterans Grant programming, etc.).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Financial Aid and Scholarships s<\/strong>uccessfully disbursed a record amount of aid on the first disbursement for winter quarter ($34 million). Several educational tax benefits were extended or made permanent in the \u201cFiscal Cliff\u201d bill passed on January 1<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>EWU\u2019s <strong>VRC was recognized as a best practice in delivering services to veterans <\/strong>(<em>The Eagles Walk the Talk<\/em><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>Many colleges and universities in Washington State tout being \u201cveteran friendly\u201d and have become Partners for Veteran Supportive Campuses through the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs.\u00a0 With diminishing financial resources, space being at a premium, and competing agendas and interests between departments and programs, enacting a veteran-related best practice can be difficult to do.\u00a0 Not so for the Eastern Washington University Eagles!\u00a0 President Rodolfo Ar\u00e9valo, along with university leadership and community supports, recently \u201cwalked the talk\u201d by opening a Veterans Resource Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EPIC Adventures (Campus Recreation) is planning spring break trips to Moab, UT and Puerto Rico.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Enrollment Update:\u00a0 <\/strong>As of January 10, 2013, total FTE winter enrollment is up 3% from last year, state FTE enrollment is up 3.4% and state head count is up 2.7%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disability Support Services <\/strong>is excited to be able to offer <strong>Tactile Graphic Braille<\/strong> for low vision and blind students who are taking classes such as Geography.<\/p>\n<p>Fall quarter <strong>Student Support and Advocacy contacts increased more than 66% over Fall 2011.<\/strong>\u00a0 Our students continue to face complex life issues, with financial concerns, stress\/anxiety, and emotional health at the top of the list.<\/p>\n<p>We are seeing a <strong>rise in influenza cases<\/strong> since students have arrived back on campus.\u00a0 As we do each year, we will educate students about preventative measures and strategies regarding what to do when you come down with the flu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Macklemore is coming to EWU on May 30<sup>th<\/sup> <\/strong>for a private concert for the student community.\u00a0\u00a0 Macklemore, a hip hop artist who hails from Seattle and has gained national acclaim for his affirming messages about diversity and his own struggles with substance abuse.\u00a0 The concert will be free to all EWU students and held shortly after the ASEWU elections.\u00a0 Those students who vote will receive priority admission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Career Services <\/strong>is happy to note that<strong> <\/strong>seven out of the eight students were accepted to the <strong>Washington Legislative Internship<\/strong> in Olympia for Winter Quarter.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\"><em><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em> NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators\/Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) is the \u201cleading association for the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref2\"><em><strong>[2]<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em> Peter Schmidt, Psy.D, Veterans Training Support Center,\u00a0 in Repetition &amp;
