Classroom Maintenance and Upgrade Request Program Instructions

University leadership has set aside $1,000,000 in capital funds this year to address deferred maintenance and technology issues in our classrooms and teaching spaces.

Submissions are open from November 1st through December 15th. Submissions must be submitted and approved by December 16, 2024. To submit your request, complete this form: https://test-inside.ewu.edu/spac/space-allocation-committee-classroom-upgrade-request/

These funds are being made exclusively available for requests from academic departments, academic programs, and colleges.

Only teaching spaces including classrooms and labs are eligible (FICM codes 110, 210, and 220). Requests for conference rooms, lounges, offices, and non-teaching spaces will not be accepted.

Upgrades that can be requested include:

  • Carpet/flooring
  • Painting
  • Furniture
  • Projectors
  • Whiteboards
  • Screens and LCD panels
  • Audio/visual improvements
  • Distance/remote learning upgrades

Upgrades that CANNOT be requested include:

  • Computers
  • Software
  • Scientific equipment and instruments
  • Lab equipment

This is due to state restrictions on the use of minor works funds and not EWU restrictions.

A major capital project to improve networking and wireless across the Cheney campus is already underway. Look for the first improvements by winter quarter in Patterson and Showalter, before we move on to other campus buildings.

Submissions will be automatically routed to your Dean for approval with a copy also sent to your Department Chair/Director. After their approval, the submission will be sent to the Space Planning Advisory Committee for review and prioritization. A copy of the request will also be shared with Academic Affairs leadership. Multiple requests for the same spaces will be combined.

We anticipate that these upgrades will extend into next summer and academic year. These funds will be carried over into the next fiscal year and will be used until they are exhausted. We are expecting that we will receive many more requests than we will be able to meet with the funds allocated. At present, there are over 330 learning spaces on the Cheney campus. As you have no doubt experienced, our learning spaces are in varying condition with a small number in great shape and many more in less than great shape. We are hopeful that additional capital funds will be earmarked in future annual budgets specifically for classrooms and classroom technology improvements.

At the end of the prioritization process, the results will be shared with the original requester, the department chair/director, and your Dean.
