ZSAT 011-18: The Satori Harold (CRN 22404) (Capacity: 20)
“What makes a good reporter? What is newsworthy? What in the world is a lede? Learn the basics of news writing and reporting ethics while creating a camp archive for web and print. As a Harold reporter, you will be responsible for documenting memorable camp highlights in a daily newspaper distributed to the camp and preserved online. Be the eyes, ears, and voice of Satori 2016! Course restrictions: Must be a returning Satori camper; high school students only.
ZSAT 011-10: We the People of Satori (CRN 22417) (Capacity: 20)
Come join the Government of Satori, where we will draft our own Constitution and create our own government. We will work together to find out if we can make our nation great!
ZSAT 011-14: The World’s Best Strategy Game (CRN 22393) (Capacity: 20)
Go is a board game of territorial conquest and originated in China 2,700 years ago. The game is rich in strategy despite its few, relatively simple rules. In this class, we’ll learn the rules, rudimentary tactics, and start on concepts of strategy. Stunningly beautiful as a game, Go is a perfect introduction to Asian conflict-theory, history, all while offering a ferocious intellectual challenge. We’ll play games, get stronger, and learn about Go’s past and future. *There is a $13 supply fee associated with this class, which must be paid at the time of online registration.
ZSAT 011- 11: A Day in the Life of a Fuel Cell Scientist (CRN 22390) (Capacity: 20) From chemistry, engineering and material science to manufacturing, business development and international travel, in this class you’ll learn that there is more to being a fuel cell scientist than just science.
ZSAT 011- 15: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility (CRN 22394) (Capacity: 20) With the rise of popularity in comic books and the characters that live on and off their pages, we will explore different topics of social justice using this form of art and communication. What can we learn and how can we influence what is produced to create a better world? Just remember that with great power comes great responsibility.
ZSAT 011- 12: Music in Media (CRN 22391) (Capacity: 20) This class will focus on the art of music for media. We will work our way through the whole process of writing music for advertising from pitch to workshopping to final product. Students will be given the opportunity to work in teams to create the music for an actual advertising segment. Like in the real world of music for media, one of the songs will be selected as the most appropriate for the video by the “client.”
ZSAT 011- 13: Molecular Medicine – Methods and Morals (CRN 22392) (Capacity: 20) Advances in biotechnology are transforming the ways we understand health and practice medicine. This course will offer both a brief introduction to the theory, techniques, and applications of molecular medicine as well as a space to explore some of the ethical considerations of its consumption by the masses.
ZSAT 011- 16: The Joy and Thrill of Stagecraft (CRN 22395) (Capacity: 20) A back to basics approach to develop and enhance stage presence focusing on projection, articulation, body language, and facial expression. We will be working with both dramatic and comedic scripts.
MIDDAY SESSION (10:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.)
ZSAT 011- 21: Sketch Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself: Art for Self-Exploration and Relaxation (CRN 22397) (Capacity: 20) In this class you will learn to focus on the creative process, engage with yourself through visual arts, and to reduce stress by getting messy. No artistic skill needed: Art is for everyone!
ZSAT 011- 23: The Rape of Europa (CRN 22405) (Capacity: 20) The Nazis looted some of the greatest European works of art, mostly from churches, museums, and Jewish collectors. Many of these works were never recovered or languish in litigation over ownership issues. We will explore Nazi art policies and strategies from the “Degenerate Art Exhibition” of 1937 to the post-war work of investigation, restoration, and recovery. Our itinerary will guided by the book Rape of Europa-The Fate of Europe’s Art Treasures in the Third Reich and World War II, which inspired films such as The Monuments Men and Woman in Gold.
ZSAT 011- 24: Inspired Doodling (CRN 22406) (Capacity: 20)
When you are bored, do you have a habit of drawing all over every post-it or piece of paper you can find? If so, this is the class for you! In this class, we will create intricate designs and patterns by doodling! We’ll use graphite, colored inks, pens and watercolors to make fabulous artistic creations. No prior art experience necessary, just a wild imagination. There is a $6 lab fee associated with this course which must be paid at the time tuition is due.
ZSAT 011- 22: Less is More: Planned Obsolescence vs. Handmade (CRN 22403) (Capacity: 20) In this class, we will critically examine today’s culture of consumption, and the true purpose of our possessions. As part of our study, students will get to complete their own 13″x13″ stitchery inspired by the ancient art of Japanese Sashiko. There is a $13 lab fee associated with this course which must be paid at the time tuition is due.
ZSAT 011- 25: Pop the Music (CRN 22407) (Capacity: 20) Why do songs become popular? In this class, we will explore pop music history, genres, influences, styles and what pop music does to dictate, change and make culture in our society. Guest speakers in this class will include radio DJs and pop musicians.
ZSAT 011- 26: Untold Voices: History through the Eyes of the Marginalized and Repressed (CRN 22408) (Capacity: 20) What kind of life would a poor gay man in medieval times live? Would a Roman slave soldier be literate or have a retirement plan? What would ‘justice’ mean to a travelling priest in the Middle East? This class will examine how various marginalized groups both lived and thought throughout history, ranging from slave soldiers in the Roman Empire to religious minorities under the Islamic caliphate. The class will also examine how the traditional study of history encourages limited analysis of events, as well as examining how different value systems have changed over time.
ZSAT 011- 28: Swords, Skulls, and Sonnets: A Modern Look at William Shakespeare (CRN 22416) (Capacity: 20) You have probably talked about him in school. You have probably read or seen Shakespeare performed, probably in movie form. So why are we still doing these dusty 400 year old plays? Let’s really dig into the cannon, and see what makes these timeless stories tick. Let’s learn the smart, funny, and often bawdy Bard.
ZSAT 011- 29: Beautiful Numbers (CRN 22387) (Capacity: 20) Ever wonder why mathematicians celebrate Pi Day? Why don’t we celebrate Phi Day, since phi is a number that shows up in history, art, nature, music, and religion? How long do you think it would take to count to a billion? Have you ever seen a triangle with three right angles? Can you visualize different types of infinity? In this course we’ll explore the surprisingly artistic side of numbers and math; we’ll challenge our brains to visualize new geometric realities where shapes do strange things; we’ll solve puzzles, riddles, and conundrums; and we’ll share (or discover!) an appreciation for the truth, simplicity, and beauty of numbers.
AFTERNOON SESSION (1:10 – 3 p.m.) ZSAT 011- 50: The Philosophy and Culture of Satori (CRN 22398) (Capacity: 25)
Satori, by the Zen Buddhist definition, is a state of sudden spiritual enlightenment. In this class we will explore not only the meaning of Satori, but the culture that surrounds it. We will study both the Japanese language and the writings of the Japanese. Students in this class will even get to use Japanese calligraphy and make their own Kanji. Prepare to be enlightened!
ZSAT 011- 20: Chasing Pathogens in the Lab and the Field (CRN 22396) (Capacity: 20) Ever wondered how bacteria and other pathogens find us so easily and unexpectedly? And, why are many of us freaked out by insects, especially those that bite us? In this class, you will be able to track the spread of bacteria, collect and identify ticks and mosquitoes at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, study the beauty of robust soil bacteria, and investigate how we protect not just ourselves, but each other from dangerous pathogens by getting vaccinated. Help us catch these small and big bugs before they catch us!
ZSAT 011- 51: Psychology: Inside the Looking Glass (CRN 22399) (Capacity: 20) Do you yearn to understand yourself and others? Are you wondering about how to work to change something about yourself or your life? Psychology examines these questions through the scientific study of mental processes and behavior. This course will provide an introduction to basic concepts in clinical psychology, including theories of personality, psychopathology, psychotherapy, and assessment.
ZSAT 011- 52: Engineers: If you Build it, They Will Break It (CRN 22409) (Capacity: 20) Ummm wanna dance? If so, take Tyler’s class. If not, take this exciting introduction to engineering class! You will be responsible for working for your own design firm who will be hired to produce plans and manage construction of a new bridge. This class will provide you an opportunity to integrate your problem solving skills with creativity, and find your competitive edge as you take on other firms to build the greatest bridge of all time!
ZSAT 011- 60: The Secret Society of Linguists (CRN 22414) (Capacity: 20)
Older than science, books and even math; language has been the hallmark of humanity. It binds us together and makes us a community. Campers will look at examples of a variety of languages, from Latin to Klingon and German to Elven, to learn the basic fundamentals of Linguistic Theory and to construct their own secret language.
ZSAT 011- 57: Get this Party Started! (CRN 22415) (Capacity: 20)
Have you ever wondered what it takes to DJ the Satori dance? The class will cover DJ theory. We will be focusing on audio equipment, digital technology, music types and styles, building set, playlists and learning how to lead interactive games. Learn how to jump from Lil Wayne to Frank Sinatra and from dubstep to hip-hop and back. If you’re lucky, you may even get to help DJ Satori’s dance!
ZSAT 011- 59: Life of Games (CRN 22418) (Capacity: 20)
In The Life of Games, students will explore the rich history and culture surrounding games. From ancient games of chance to misappropriating semi-sacred artifacts to pass the time, humans have a great tradition of applying rules to play. Come learn about a variety of games and gain knowledge of how to apply the skills learned and practiced therein to the real world.
ZSAT 011- 54: Yphargopyt Citenik (Kinetic Typography) (CRN 22411) (Capacity: 20) Just when you thought TYPOGRAPHY couldn’t get any cooler, along comes Kinetic Typography. In this class you will develop your graphic design and typography skills while working in a 3D video environment. Using Apple’s Final Cut Pro and Motion software, you will create moving typography and other digital art to illustrate sounds bites from your favorite movies or songs. I guarantee your initial 3D frustration will be overcome with joy and more likely laughter. !ssalc uoy ni eeS.
ZSAT 011- 55 & 56: The Class Where You Bring Close-toed Shoes* And Then We Dance.” (CRN 22412 Boys, 22413 Girls) (Capacity: 10 boys, 10 girls) Dancing with a partner is fun, and easier than you think. There is no experience necessary, and we’ll learn Swing, Salsa, Waltz, and Tango. Warning: Boys and girls will dance together. * All participants MUST bring non-marking, close-toed SHOES (no sandals) or they will not be allowed to participate. Also socks, to wear under the shoes.
