ZSAT 011 – 18: The Satori Harold (CRN 22404) (Capacity: 20)
What makes a good reporter? What is newsworthy? What in the world is a lede? Learn the basics of news writing and reporting ethics while creating a camp archive for web and print. As a Harold reporter, you will be responsible for documenting memorable camp highlights in a daily newspaper distributed to the camp and preserved online. Be the eyes, ears, and voice of Satori 2015!
Course restrictions: Must be a returning Satori camper; high school students only.
ZSAT 011 – 10: Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Satori! (CRN 22417) (Capacity: 20)
Experience the extraordinary world of African percussion. You will learn techniques for playing several different instruments in the four major families of African percussion: bells, shakers, mallets, and drums. We will take these techniques and learn to layer together drum grooves based on Duple and Triple time signatures, explore techniques for developing solos, and perform for other campers. Remembers, as a percussionist, the world is your instrument and the grooves are endless!
ZSAT 011-14: The World’s Best Strategy Game (CRN 22393) (Capacity: 20)
Go is a board game of territorial conquest and originated in China 2,700 years ago. The game is rich in strategy despite its few, relatively simple rules. In this class, we’ll learn the rules, rudimentary tactics, and start on concepts of strategy. Stunningly beautiful as a game, Go is a perfect introduction to Asian conflict- theory, history, all while offering a ferocious intellectual challenge. We’ll play games, get stronger, and learn about Go’s past and future.

ZSAT 011-11: Fuel Cell Design and Development (CRN 22390) (Capacity: 20)
One of the most pressing issues of today is the need for clean energy solutions to halt global climate change and curb the use of limited fossil fuels. Fuel cells are a technology that can be adapted to meet the wide variety of applications, but what does the design process actually entail? What do designers need to consider in order to make a robust product that actually works? This class will look at the steps taken to design fuel cell systems to meet the needs of customers. By the end of the class you’ll have a greater appreciation for the design process and what it takes to create a fuel cell.
ZSAT 011-12: Badly Behaved Women (CRN 22391) (Capacity: 20)
The historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich once wrote: “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” This phrase has since been repeated innumerable times. Who, then, are these history makers? This class will serve as an introduction to the often unsung revolutionaries, artists, thinkers, and taste-makers who have shaped our world. We will talk about a range of historic and current figures and discuss the lives of women throughout the ages. Let this class inspire you to make history!
ZSAT 011-13: Listen to Your Eyes (CRN 22392) (Capacity: 20)
Symbols, icons, advertising, fashion, architecture. We’re constantly surrounded by visual communication, but we rarely take time to think about it critically. If you’re not careful it’s easy to be manipulated by your environment, especially as our digital modes of communication become increasingly saturated with visual communication. This course will explore the visual world and how we perceive it, and you will learn to expand your own visual literacy.
ZSAT 011-15: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility (CRN 22394) (Capacity: 20)
With the rise of popularity in comic books and the characters that live on and off their pages, we will explore different topics of social justice using this for of art and communication. What can we learn and how can we influence what is produced to create a better world? Just remember that with great power comes great responsibility.
ZSAT 011-16: 3D Audio: Can’t Touch This (CRN 22395 (Capacity: 20)
What’s up with mono, stereo and binaural audio recording!? Learn about an 1881 French invention and find out how it’s making a comeback. We’ll inquire about music and fire, then wind up wire in this year’s take home project: personalized headphones! Place your bets and join this class to find out who wins in “The Bass” vs. “The Blaze.” Imagine the possibilities, reflect on history, and take home a Satori music coterie experience!

ZSAT 011-22: Judo and Self-Defense (CRN 22403) (Capacity: 20)
Ichi! Ni! San! Shi! Students will learn basic karate, judo and self-defense techniques taught in the authentic martial arts atmosphere. The course will include moving basics, kata, basic throwing and falling techniques and knowledge of Eastern culture. The concepts of dignity and respect will be emphasized along with a strengthening of the spirit, which allows the student to push back the limits of their physical prowess.
ZSAT 011-23: Putin: The Soviet Reunion and the Second World War? (CRN 22405) (Capacity: 20)
The Russian writer Masha Gessen ominously subtitled her biography of Vladimir Putin The Man Without A Face. Putin, a former KGB apparatchik , has eviscerated the Russian constitution and manufactured a new personality cult. Dissent from Pussy Riot and journalists is met with sentences to the gulag or assassination. His intervention in the Ukraine is predicated by the delusional pretense that the coup was orchestrated Nazis. Learn how Putin’s autocracy is in line with Russian history- Ivan IV (the Terrible) to Stalin- from a scholar who has studied in the Soviet Union and published several works on the de-Stalinization policies of Gorbachev.
ZSAT 011-24: Inspired Doodling (CRN 22406) (Capacity: 20)
When you are bored, do you have a habit of drawing all over every post-it or piece of paper you can find? If so, this is the class for you! In this class, we will create intricate designs and patterns by doodling! We’ll use graphite, colored inks, pens and watercolors to make fabulous artistic creations. No prior art experience necessary, just a wild imagination.

ZSAT 011-20: Chasing Pathogens in the Lab and the Field (CRN 22396) (Capacity: 20)
Ever wondered how bacteria and other pathogens find us so easily and unexpectedly? And, why are many of us freaked out by insects, especially those that bite us? In this class, you will be able to track the spread of bacteria, collect and identify ticks and mosquitoes at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, study the beauty of robust soil bacteria, and investigate how we protect not just ourselves, but each other from dangerous pathogens by getting vaccinated. Help us catch these small and big bugs before they catch us!
ZSAT 011-21: You Are What You Wear (CRN 22397) (Capacity: 20)
We use what we buy to express who we are as individuals, and to define our values. In this class, we will compare modern-day fashion and pop-culture with more traditional forms of garment production. As part of this study, we will create our own works inspired by Japanese Sashiko, a stitching technique used to create and repair garments. Come prepared to question the ethics of everyday items, and to participate in an art of making.
ZSAT 011-60: The Secret Society of Linguists (CRN 22414) (Capacity: 20)
Older than science, books and even math; language has been the hallmark of humanity. It binds us together and makes us a community. Campers will look at examples of a variety of languages, from Latin to Klingon and German to Elven, to learn the basic fundamentals of Linguistic Theory and to construct their own secret language.
ZSAT 011-25: Pop the Music (CRN 22407) (Capacity: 20)
Why do songs become popular? In this class, we will explore pop music history, genres, influences, styles and what pop music does to dictate, change and make culture in our society. Guest speakers in this class will include radio DJs and pop musicians.
ZSAT 011-26: Untold Voices: History through the Eyes of the Marginalized and Repressed (CRN 22408) (Capacity: 20)
What kind of life would a poor gay man in medieval times live? Would a Roman slave soldier be literate or have a retirement plan? What would ‘justice’ mean to a travelling priest in the Middle East? This class will examine how various marginalized groups both lived and thought throughout history, ranging from slave soldiers in the Roman Empire to religious minorities under the Islamic caliphate. The class will also examine how the traditional study of history encourages limited analysis of events, as well as examining how different value systems have changed over time.

ZSAT 011-50: The Philosophy and Culture of Satori (CRN 22398) (Capacity: 25)
Satori, by the Zen Buddhist definition, is a state of sudden spiritual enlightenment. In this class we will explore not only the meaning of Satori, but the culture that surrounds it. We will study both the Japanese language and the writings of the Japanese. Students in this class will even get to use Japanese calligraphy and make their own Kanji. Prepare to be enlightened!
ZSAT 011-52: The Dark Side of Language: Psychological Flexibility and Mental Health (CRN 22409) (Capacity: 20)
Human language has been the catalyst for the incredible achievements of the modern, technological world. At the same time, stress, conflict, and mental illness are also epidemic in the modern age. As Lisa Simpson noted, “As intelligence goes up, happiness goes down.” This class will first examine the dark side of language and learn how cutting-edge research from psychology and neuroscience can explain how the human “word machine” runs amok and contributes to anxiety, depression, stigma, and prejudice. Then we will look at a possible antidote, psychological flexibility. We will explore how processes like mindfulness, perspective-taking, and imitating Chewbacca can help people live a valued life in a hectic world.
ZSAT 011-53: Stick it to Me (CRN 22410) (Capacity: 14)
Fencing at Satori is formal instruction in movement and blade position. We will work from the perspective of balance and target to master the ebb and flow of combat. Similarly we will touch on the historical foundations of fencing and how it has changed through time. But, ultimately, it is the opportunity to play with swords… and so we take the time to learn the fundamentals in order to share the “joy” of edge and point with others.

Sing, sing a song. Sing out loud. Sing out strong! In this class which is being brought back due to high demand after a decade-long hiatus, is for all levels of singers. Boys and girls are welcome. If you love to sing, this is the class for you. The Satori Chamber Singers will learn several different types of songs to sing and there may even be opportunity to solo. The Satori Chamber Singers will have several chances throughout the week to perform for the camp. Whether you have experience or not, come sing your heart out!
ZSAT 011-57: Get this Party Started! (CRN 22415) (Capacity: 20)
Have you ever wondered what it takes to DJ the Satori dance? The class will cover DJ theory. We will be focusing on audio equipment, digital technology, music types and styles, building set, playlists and learning how to lead interactive games. Learn how to jump from Lil Wayne to Frank Sinatra and from dubstep to hip-hop and back. If you’re lucky, you may even get to help DJ Satori’s dance!
ZSAT 011-59: Life of Games (CRN 22418) (Capacity: 20)
In The Life of Games, students will explore the rich history and culture surrounding games. From ancient games of chance to misappropriating semi- sacred artifacts to pass the time, humans have a great tradition of applying rules to play. Come learn about a variety of games and gain knowledge of how to apply the skills learned and practiced therein to the real world.
ZSAT 011-54: Yphargopyt Citenik (Kinetic Typography) (CRN 22411) (Capacity: 20)
Just when you thought TYPOGRAPHY couldn’t get any cooler, along comes Kinetic Typography. In this class you will develop your graphic design and typography skills while working in a 3D video environment. Using Apple’s Final Cut Pro and Motion software, you will create moving typography and other digital art to illustrate sounds bites from your favorite movies or songs. Learn everything you need to know to be on stage! Each day this class will teach you a different aspect of being a performer.
