Here is a Throwback Thursday image of when the Eastern Washington University Army ROTC Color Guard presented the colors to welcome the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford to EWU. The former President visited 37 years ago to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary on April 14th, 1982. Do any of our Fight Eagles alumni from the 1980’s remember this event?

The Eastern Washington University (EWU) Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) extends its congratulations to the former I Corps Commanding General, Lieutenant General (LTG) Gary Volesky for his retirement from the U.S. Army after over 36 years of military service.
LTG Volesky is a 1983 Distinguished Military Graduate from EWU and the highest ranking member of the university’s Military Science Hall of Fame.
LTG Volesky’s Change of Command with incoming I Corps Commander, LTG Randy A. George was held at Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) on February 4, 2020. The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) Commander, General Robert Abrams and the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) Commander, General Paul LaCamera both spoke during the ceremony. General LaCamera additionally oversaw the symbolic passing of the guide on from LTG Volesky to LTG George.

LTG Volesky who is originally from Spokane, has had a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Army that began here at Eastern Washington University. One of the plaques we still have hanging up in Cadet Hall recognized the then Cadet Volesky for his “Aggressiveness” back in 1983.
We additionally have some old yearbooks in Cadet Hall where we have an image of LTG Volesky being commissioned into the rank of 2nd Lieutenant by the then EWU Army ROTC Professor of Military Science, Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Walter.
From everyone at EWU Army ROTC we congratulate LTG Volesky on his retirement. His over 36 years of committed service to the U.S. Army and our nation is remarkable. He is truly an example of outstanding leadership for all our Cadets to aspire to. Go Fighting Eags!
Today Captain (CPT) Anthony Fleck, a 2015 graduate from the Eastern Washington University (EWU) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) battalion, took command of the Recruiting Company in charge of enlisting new U.S. Army Soldiers from the Greater Spokane region. After graduating from Eastern in 2015 with a degree in Psychology, Anthony commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Ordnance Branch through the university’s Army ROTC program.
After being selected for the Ordnance branch, CPT Fleck was then selected to attend the prestigious Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) School at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. After completing EOD training Anthony was then stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). While stationed at JBLM he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq to conduct EOD duties in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
Now as a Recruiting Company commander he will be in charge of all the recruiting stations in the Spokane area, northern Idaho, the Pullman-Lewiston region, as well as our local recruiting station here in Cheney. There is no one better than a Spokane local and a proud EWU graduate to enlist new Soldiers from the area into our great Army.

Here is a picture of what the Eastern Washington University (EWU) campus looked like back in 1964. Back then the school was called Eastern Washington State College. Cadet Hall is pictured next to the old Fieldhouse that burned down back in 1970’s. The Computing and Engineering Building was built in its place next to Cadet Hall in 2006. The football stadium that is pictured was replaced by today’s Roos Field constructed on the other side of Washington Street from the EWU campus. The old football stadium has been knocked down and replaced with the construction of the JFK Library and a grassy area known today as JFK Field. This field is where we hold some our weekly ROTC leadership labs at during the year.
With some of our Eastern Washington University (EWU) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cadets still going through Advanced Camp this summer. I thought it would be fun to show one of our alumni going through Advanced Camp back in 1965 at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Does any of our EWU Army ROTC alumni recognize the pictured individual?
