About PLUS

The Program Leading to University Success (PLUS) provides free academic support to EWU students through collaborative study groups and supplemental instruction, small group tutoring, academic coaching, and online academic assistance. Peers work with other peers in the Learning Commons of JFK Library, classrooms across campus, and Catalyst and SIERR Buildings in Spokane. Services are provided to students by professional staff and student employees to support the achievement of their academic and career goals. PLUS is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) to provide internationally recognized tutor training.

Program History

The Program Leading to University Success (PLUS) is an academic support program that first began offering study groups to students at EWU in the fall of 1992.

Study groups are typically offered for courses that have been identified as being historically difficult for students based on the rate of D, W, and F course grades received, as well as student and faculty feedback.

In the fall of 2010, one-on-one tutoring was introduced, and in the winter of 2011, the PLUS program joined the Western eTutoring Consortium, providing students online access to tutors at colleges and universities across the western United States.

In 2012, PLUS moved to the main floor of JFK Library to serve as a partner in the Learning Commons, along with the Writers’ Center, Multimedia Commons, Library, Academic Advising, Career Services, and the Office of Global Initiatives (OGI).

CRLA Certifications – Levels I, II, III

International TUTOR Training Program Certification (ITTPC)

Since 1989, over 1,000 college tutor training programs around the globe have received ITTPC at one or more Levels. These programs have recognized thousands as Certified Tutors, Certified Advanced Tutors, or Certified Master Tutors.

Benefits of Certification

ITTPC and IMTPC provide professionals with the opportunity to create, improve, and expand tutor and mentor training for a campus’ unique programs. CRLA-certified programs demonstrate high standards:

  • Certification provides recognition and positive reinforcement for tutors’ and mentors’ successful work;
  • Certification sets professional standards of skill and training for tutors and mentors;
  • Certification augments program credibility for administrators and institutions.
