About the Summer Proposal Development Academy (SPDA)
Eastern Washington University’s Provost’s Office sponsors a month-long grant-writing workshop called the Summer Proposal Development Academy (SPDA) through the Office of Grant and Research Development (OGRD). The SPDA creates the capacity for EWU faculty and staff to write and submit grant and contract proposals. Occurring each July, EWU faculty and staff will receive time and compensation to develop proposals. These proposals may be single-PI or collaborative proposals, and multiple PIs may or may not participate in SPDA.
Two-Step Application Process
Each winter, OGRD publishes a two-step application process to SPDA.
Pre-Application: The pre-application’s function is to help potential applicants (a) locate a solicitation; and (b) pre-determine logistics of course release/buy-out or job duties release/overtime (in case of a staff applicant). Full Application: Pre-applications are a pre-requisite to submit the full application. Applicants will receive access to—and may only submit—the full application upon receiving written permission by OGRD. 2025 deadline: March 31, 2025; 11:59 p.m. PDT
SPDA Logistics
Time requirements: July 7-August 1, 2025; 20 hours per week; synchronous instruction on Mondays for 6 hours. Furthermore, we will query for in-person and online availability in the full application, neither of which affects acceptance to the program.
Compensation: $5,000 per participant paid in multiple installments, upon receipt of deliverables.
Full application requirements: Each participant or group must identify a solicitation to write for in the summer workshop. Each solicitation must be worth a minimum of $10,000. The solicitation’s deadline must occur between August 15, 2025-April 15, 2026, however, please inquire within if your solicitation’s deadline falls outside that window of time. The full application will be due March 31, 2025, 11:59 p.m. PDT. Again, pre-applications are a pre-requisite to submit a full application.

Other: We may have an social event before and after SPDA this Summer 2025 pending availability of participants.
Eligibility: All EWU staff and faculty are eligible to apply and participate in SPDA. However, all former SPDA participants are excluded from participating again.
