Congratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Tiago Correia for completing his McNair Summer Research Internship! Tiago was selected for a full-time eight-and-a-half-week summer position in the Central Convergence Research Experiences for Undergraduates (CC-REU) at Central Washington University. Tiago worked with mentor Dr. Brandy Wiegers on summer 2023 research, “An Androgen-Dependent Mathematical Model of the Menstrual Cycle“. Tiago’s research was presented August 16, 2023 at the McNair Summer Research Symposium.
Tiago and Dr. Wiegers’ research team aimed to: (1) create a mathematical model to simulate changes in hormone levels and follicular mass during the menstrual cycle, and (2) Eventually use the model to simulate conditions associated with PCOS, while (3) specifically emphasizing the role of androgens (e.g. testosterone) in the menstrual cycle.
Tiago is a first-generation student working towards a Bachelor of Science in mathematics at Eastern Washington University. He is interested in several areas of math, including topology, complex analysis, and algebra. He plans to one day attend a PhD program in mathematics, and after that, his goal is to do postdoctoral research and become a professor. Tiago currently works as a tutor at the Kingston Math Tutoring Lab and for PLUS (the Program Leading to University Success).
