Congratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Mary Belton! Mary has been accepted to San Diego State University’s Master of Arts Degree in English.
San Diego State University notes this program:
[…]offers a wide range of courses and approaches to studying literature and writing. Faculty publications are similarly diverse. They include major literary biographies, historical studies, critical analysis from various current perspectives, reviews of and interviews with contemporary writers, and a broad spectrum of original poetry and fiction.
Mary Belton is a first-generation college student at Eastern Washington University majoring in English Secondary Education with a minor in English as a Second Language. Mary decided to major in Secondary English Education as she is passionate about teaching and helping others, especially children, achieve their educational goals. Her love for this field comes from the connections literature makes between cultures, history, philosophy, religion, and other fields of study. Mary believes everyone has a chance to achieve whatever educational aspirations they want. In the future, Mary is interested in teaching English Literature at a community college/university, being a teacher at a correctional facility, or teaching English overseas. For her 2023 Summer Research Internship, under the mentorship of Dr. Christina Valeo, Mary is researched what authors such as Virginia Woolf reveal about the social operations of the patriarchy through writing and utilizing a feminist theory lens. We know Mary will bring a passionate, empowering, and equitable experience to her future students and encourage diverse thoughts within any graduate studies cohort.
