Congratulations to EWU McNair Scholar Claudio Escalante! Claudio has been accepted to Purdue University‘s Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) to work with faculty mentor Professor Tamara Kinzer-Ursem, with the College of Engineering in the School of Biomedical Engineering. This exceptional opportunity includes a stipend of $4000, research experience, roundtrip transportation, university housing for eight weeks, professional development workshops, access to Purdue’s facilities, Poster Research presentations, community building social activities, and a Closing Awards Ceremony.
Claudio is majoring in Biology and minoring in Engineering at EWU. With mentor Dr. David Daberkow, in the summer of 2022, Claudio developed his own experiment to determine the best place for dopamine microelectrode placement in the rat brain. He built on Dr. Daberkow’s previous experiment and searched for a lesion created in the rat dorsal striatum, using a cryostat machine to slice the brain and find the exact area in the striatum where they caused the lesion.
The McNair staff are gratified to see Claudio’s hard work recognized by his acceptance into Purdue’s SROP, where he will gain experience doing research at the intersection of Biology and Engineering.
