Online Learning
Online Learning is a great option for those working full-time and those who live outside the greater Cheney/Spokane area. Many programs are offered completely online, giving you the flexibility to do your coursework largely on your own schedule and at your own location. Here’s how it works:
- Connect with course materials – From your computer, you’ll connect either to an online learning management system such as Canvas or other resources such as Zoom and Google Drive. These web-based solutions allow you to access course materials, including recorded lectures, and interact with faculty and fellow classmates in online forums at any time.
- Follow deadlines – As with a classroom course, you start and finish each online course with the rest of your cohort. All students have the same deadlines, and you will need to keep up with all lectures, readings, and assignments.
- Participate on your schedule – Although there will be prescribed deadlines in your online courses, your participation can happen at any point within that timeframe, as your schedule permits. This allows maximum flexibility to complete coursework and achieve your education goals.
Technology Requirements
- The learning management system Canvas runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems.

- Reliable high-speed internet connection (broadband recommended)
- Webcam and microphone (recommended)
In addition, you may need access to one or more of the following tools and technologies for some courses:
- Use of Microsoft Office365 (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Acrobat Reader.
- Some courses may require uploading self-recorded videos or audio files for assignments or other coursework.
- You may be asked to participate in online collaboration using tools such as OneDrive and/or Google Drive. Current students have access to EWU-created accounts in those products through SSO.
- Researching information in the Library or using the Library databases.
Online Student Orientation course
This self-paced course is designed to help you become a successful online learner and acclimate to the online learning environment. The orientation will provide you with an introduction to your online courses and help you become familiar with the necessary tools to access course components, resources, and other information you need to succeed.
This is an open course conducted in Canvas.
