You should provide a program specific orientation for new graduate students to get them off to the best start.
The Office of Graduate Studies also provides a new student orientation to acquaint incoming students to the many resources at Eastern Washington University. This orientation is available in Canvas. It serves as a resource for students and faculty to refer back to as they progress towards graduation.
School of Global Learning
The School of Global Learning has services to acclimate and assist new students and a variety of resources aimed at international students. For students from different cultures, attention may be needed to address:
- English language strengths and weaknesses (the School of Global Learning is a helpful resource)
- How research and originality of thought are paramount to their program, beyond grades or performing to stated measures
- Norms and standards regarding research and academic integrity
- Assimilating with the student body
- Immigration and travel guidelines
After being admitted, the School of Global Learning hosts a quarterly immigration check-in and orientation that is a required event for all newly admitted international students, international transfer students, and students who have completed the English Language Institute (ELI) coursework and received full academic admission to EWU.
Students who do not attend the orientation or the check-in will have a hold placed on their student account and will not be able to register for classes. More information on the annual orientation and check-in can be found on the EWU Global website under Arrival, Check-in and Orientation.
Issues that may delay candidacy advancement include but are not limited to:
Often program directors are called upon to give guidance in personal matters such as health and wellness, conflict resolution, and personal development when a graduate student is moving into the next stage of study, research, or career advancement.
