SUMMARY:Pass Through the Pillars
DESCRIPTION:In the days before most students had cars\, passenger trains brought EWU students to downtown Cheney each fall. Students hauled their suitcases and bags up College Avenue to campus. Today’s new students honor this tradition with a ceremonial stroll through the Herculean Pillars at the top of College Ave. With luggage already safely stowed in their residence halls\, new students exchange high-fives and cheers with EWU community members who line the path. The pillars are built with granite stones from the first campus building. When a fire destroyed that building in 1912\, the stones were repurposed to create the pillars.

SUMMARY:EWU Home Football Game
DESCRIPTION:Mariachi las Águilas will be playing and Chicana/o/x Studies will be honored. \nMariachi Las Águilas (The Eagles) is an EWU music organization comprised of students\, alumni\, and family members who dedicate their time to learning and performing mariachi music. It provides a cultural home for all those who love mariachi music. In addition\, Las Águilas musicians represent EWU in the community by performing on campus\, throughout Spokane\, and beyond. In addition to showcasing the allure and artistry of mariachi\, their performances serve as a connection between the university and the broader Latino community. \nIn 1977 a group of students of Mexican ancestry who identified as Chicana/os in recognition of their unique social\, cultural\, and political identities joined forces with a Chicano Art Professor\, Rubén Trejo\, to establish the Chicano Education Program. Since its creation\, this program has served as an academic and community center for students and their families.
