The University Environmental Programs are managed by EH&S according to Federal and State Regulatory Standards.
Hazardous Waste
The purpose of this program is the proper management and disposal of hazardous waste generated on campus to comply with state and federal regulations.
EH&S oversees the pickup and disposal of thousands of pounds of hazardous chemicals and products from both the Riverpoint and the main campus each year. We also coordinate the disposal of hazardous materials from building renovations and demolition as needed.
Universal Waste
The purpose of this program is the proper management and recycling of common household and business waste that may contain hazardous components. Most universal waste, when properly treated, can be recycled.
EH&S is responsible for disposal of batteries, light bulbs, ballasts, aerosol cans, and any mercury containing items (like thermometers and mercury switches).
Biowaste
The purpose of this program is the proper management and disposal of biohazardous materials and waste. EH&S collects and processes numerous types of biowaste including lab animals used in experiments, red bag waste, sharps and cadaver waste. Proper handling and disposal is important to prevent contact with potentially infectious materials (blood and other body fluids) that could spread hepatitis and HIV. These wastes are sent to a burner unit for proper treatment and disposal.
