The National Fire Protection Agency estimates that fires resulting from space heaters account for 84% of civilian deaths, 75% of civilian injuries, and 52% of direct property damage. Over Thanksgiving a family in Texas were killed in a fire sparked by a space heater, and five puppies were killed in an Oklahoma City space heater fire at the end of November.
Keep your house and family safe by using your space heater safely.
- Make sure you always plug your space heater directly into the wall; most extension cords can’t handle the amount of electricity the space heater uses.
- Keep the heater at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, including furniture.
- Never leave space heaters unattended.
It is a good idea to have a fire plan for your family and/or roommates. Make sure everyone knows where you will meet if you need to escape the house or apartment.
