Eastern Washington University’s Exempt Classification and Compensation Study

Overview

EWU Compensation Study for Administrative Non-Represented Employees

Eastern Washington University completed a comprehensive Exempt Classification and Compensation Study to support and retain our administrative exempt (non-represented) staff. This initiative provided the University with the opportunity to modernize and improve its classification and compensation systems to better reflect the needs of the campus and the competitive job market.

Purpose of the Study

The study was designed to evaluate and update the structure for all non-contracted, exempt employees. Key objectives included:

  • Review Job Descriptions
Job descriptions were reviewed to determine the most appropriate compensation range.
  • Development of a Classification Structure
A new exempt classification framework was established to create greater clarity, consistency, and efficiency in how positions are categorized and aligned within the organization.
  • Creation of a Compensation Philosophy
A compensation philosophy was developed to guide decisions related to pay equity, salary progression, and internal alignment, with the goal of supporting a transparent and sustainable compensation system.

Our Commitment

The results of the study supported EWU’s ongoing commitment to fostering a workplace culture where staff are:

  • Valued – Recognized for their skills, contributions, and institutional knowledge.
  • Supported – Provided with clear pathways for growth and development.
  • Equitably Compensated – Paid fairly and competitively in relation to the broader labor market.
  • Informed – Given visibility into how decisions related to classification and compensation are made.

Looking Ahead

The implementation of this updated classification and compensation structure positioned EWU to better recruit, retain, and develop talented exempt staff. Human Resources will continue to provide updates, guidance, and support as the new framework is integrated into university operations.
