Students are at the heart of what we do as a regional comprehensive institution, as such it is important to have clear resources for reporting and analyzing our student Eagles. EWU Institutional Research provides the institution with a variety of resources available to EWU faculty, staff and the general public. We aim to be the provider of data, and not the gate keeper. Transparency and trust drives the Mission and Vision of Institutional Research.
Types of Data Available:
Publicly Available Data
Institutional Research currently hosts fur publicly available dashboards:
Annual Fall Enrollment: This dashboard provides a general overview of each academic year’s fall enrollment. Did you know; 71% of our students are Undergraduate students, 88% of our students have residency in the State of Washington, 16.23% of students identify as Hispanic/Latino (18.44% when filtered to just undergraduate students)? This dashboard is intended to answer all of your high level questions on enrollment at EWU. For more specific questions, skip ahead to Eastern up close.
Peer Comparison: How does Eastern stack up to its regional peers? This dashboard intends to help answer some of those questions. IR selected six regional peers to include in this dashboard: Central Washington University, Montana State University, University of Idaho, University of Montana, and Western Washington University. These schools were selected by IR as regional peers, but we are happy to take suggestions on adding additional institutions. Data are gathered from IPEDS and are trended over a five year range and include: enrollment, retention, graduation rates, underserved minority enrollment, Pell grant recipients, and federal loan data.
Annual Retention: Always a hot topic come October! How many of our students persisted from their first year to their second year? This dashboard is your answer to the on of most commonly used measure of success in higher education. This dashboard allows the user to toggle between different populations such as; new freshman, new transfer, first generation status, self identified race/ethnicity, residency, and more! This dashboard even offers the flexibility to do comparisons across populations.
Graduation Rates: Come the end of the academic year, the focus shifts to “how many of our students graduated?” find your answer here! This dashboard includes all the same filters as the Annual Retention Dashboard.
Eastern up Close: The faculty and staff student data portal
Institutional Research utilizes Tableau for aggregate data reporting and visualization. The reason aggregate data is emphasized here is due to FERPA compliance and protection of personally identifiable data. Specifically, data is redacted when student headcount falls below 10. EWU utilizes Argos reporting system for all your personally identifiable data needs.
Eastern up Close is your portal to aggregate student data! On this page you will find six breadth areas; Enrollment, Retention, Graduation, Grades, Equity Gaps, and Our Research. Each breadth interactive tile will provide a brief summary of the reports you will find in each area. Our most common dashboards are highlighted under each breadth area, but check out the full library of dashboards here.
Census Enrollment is the most utilized dashboard on our suite of 50+ dashboards. This dashboard displays all things enrollment and provides a wide variety of filters in order to drill down to the level of specificity you need. Need to know how many students declared in the School of Education are first-generation students, look no further!
Argos: Personally Identifiable Data
Argos is the Institutional Researches Personally Identifiable (PII) data reporting tool. Here you will find reports that have the flexibility to provide a large general set of line by line student data, or you can request specific reports that will fit your specific needs. Example of reports in Argos include department specific reports that allow users to view the each student in their major and current grade point averages.
An overview of the “General Purpose” reports can be found here. These reports allow users to filter, sort and export specific data, but as the name suggest these are meant to be broad (maybe even overwhelming), so please feel free to contact us for help or request a more specific report.
Please note, the data contained within Argos is largely personally identifiable data which will require the user to have been approved for access to specific data elements. You can find the request for database permissions here. Requesting access to student data will require an approval process from your supervisor and the appropriate data custodian. Please contact Institutional Research if you are unsure what permissions to request.
